Who we are
our story
The story of our company actually starts with a brief family history beginning in 1971. In that year, George “Sgt Andy” Andrews started Andy’s appliance repair here in Lincoln, NE with his wife. His son, Terry (my dad), was one of his first employees and took over the business from Grandpa Bud (I have no idea where that nickname came from) in the 90’s.
I began working there in 1996, though it seemed more so my folks could keep an eye on me than that I was actually of any real use to them, lol. I mostly answered phones, dealt with inventory, and did minor tasks befitting a somewhat unreliable teenager. In 2001, I began to take this job seriously, transitioned to full time work, and started to learn the technician side of the business.
Around 2008, my dad sold the company to my brother- He was the oldest and had a business degree whereas I was just a decent technician at the time so this totally made sense to the whole family. My dad transitioned full time into teaching appliance repair at SCC Milford.
My dad passed away in 2013 after a brief bought with cancer and in 2014 I was shocked when my brother introduced me to my new boss! It was all a very quiet deal and I admit that I did not take it well initially.
2017 rolls around and it has been 3 years of near constant disagreement between the “insubordinate employee” and the “New guy who just happens to own the place”. I left Andy’s after a brief discussion with a few close confidants and my mom. I had signed a non-compete agreement with my brother and despite much counsel I received informing me that they are legally unenforceable and things of that nature, I decided to honor the non-compete because I didn’t want to start my company with my first action being to prove that my word means nothing.
So I sold my house and moved myself and my 2 children ( I was also a widower at this time as my wife had died 6 months before my dad) back into Mom’s house at the ripe young age of 37. I waited just over a year and on September 1, 2018 I formed Andrews’ Appliance Repair as a tribute to my Dad and Grandfather. I hope what we do here makes them proud above all else and I like to think of us as the “spiritual successor” to what Andy’s was in the 90’s.
In Spring of 2023 a great thing happened when I found Jinky through an online service and she quickly became an indispensable part of the company. She is a part of nearly every decision that we make and is largely responsible for keeping me organized. She also does much of our design work and has been instrumental in the professional appearance of the company- just don’t blame her for the silliness on the website.
One last little aside- Andy’s was sold again within the last few years and, while I’ve only met him once, the current owner seems like a drastic improvement to the fella who owned the place when I parted ways with them. I’m not in any way trying to put them down, I just feel it is important to explain the similarity in names and what the relationship between the two companies is. Other than being started by the same family in different time periods, there is no relation between the ownership of the companies- though my younger brother does still work at Andy’s as a technician.
